O-RAN: Disrupting the Virtualized RAN Ecosystem

The O-RAN Alliance is a worldwide effort to reach new levels of openness in next-generation virtualized radio access networks (vRANs). Initially launched by five major mobile carriers couple years ago, it nowadays supported over 160 companies (including 24 operators across 4 continents) representing an outstanding example how and suppliers around the world can constructively collaborate define novel technical standards. In this article, we provide summary RAN architecture along with its main building blocks. Then practical use case exploiting AI/ML-based innovations enabled presented, showcasing disrupting potential. Based on this, defined interfaces services are described. Finally, discussion pros cons provided conclusions.
